In this workshop participants will learn how to enamel on a raised metal surface and construct their own unique brooch. Jewellery artist, Nora Kovats, has been working with enamelling as her primary technique for five years. She will be guiding participants into an intuitive method of designing and enamelling.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or jewellers who wish to expand their palette of techniques and explore new enamelling approaches. The structure will consist of an introduction, a detailed demo of dry shifting, stencilling and wet paint enamel and a substantial experimental part where participants are free to create their own work. Students can also sign up for an additional day for more demonstrations and experimentation of advanced techniques such as grisaille (black-and-white enamels), graphite on white enamels, experiments with different melting temperatures, champlevé and cloisonné.
When: 10 am - 5 pm, 19th of October 2019 (an optional second day, 20 October).
Cost: 588 RMB (with an additional 588 RMB for the optional second day).
Language: English with some Chinese translation.
All the materials and tools will be provided.
1 Day workshop breaks down:
• Artist talk and introduction of basic techniques (dry shifting and wet painting) and artist personal approach to enamelling.
• Explanation of necessary preparations for enamelling: cleaning plate, washing paints.
• Demo of basic sifting technique with a chemical explanation of melting points and physical behaviour of enamels.
• Demo of wet paint technique.
• Preparation and first firings on copper test plates.
• Participants press copper plate with the hydraulic press to create a three-dimensional shape and then saw out their own designs. This will be the bases for the enamel which will be finished off as a brooch.
Additional day breakdown:
• Introduction to advanced techniques: grisaille (black-and-white enamels), graphite on white enamels, experiments with different melting temperatures, champlevé and cloisonné.
• Demo of different techniques.
• Preparation and first firings on copper test plates.
• Participants design their final piece either a pendant of brooch and use copper and their desired techniques to make their own jewellery piece. The teacher will give guidelines for the projects but allow participants to develop their colour scheme/texture/personal interpretation.
